Jeff Glass passed away on May 17th, the day after his 64th birthday. He was lap swimming in San Ramon when he succumbed to a heart attack. 

Jeff did not die in a Barcalounger, remote control in one hand and beer in the other. His was a life well-lived, inspired by an adage seen on billboards when he was budget backpacking through the Australian outback in the early 1980s: “Life: Be in It.” 

Jeff was born at the old Eden Hospital in Castro Valley on May 16th 1957, the second of four sons of Bill and Arden Glass. He attended area schools and graduated from Castro Valley High School in 1975 where he was a member of the varsity swim team and excelled in most subjects except wood shop. He attended Claremont Men’s College (now Claremont McKenna College) where he swam competitively and was an All-American who competed in the Nationals. He graduated with a BA in Economics in 1979, later earned an MBA in finance from Haas Business School at UC Berkeley, and was the class valedictorian at Perfect Husband School, an achievement for which Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte personally congratulated him.

I went to Castro Valley High with Jeff.  We worked on the high school newspaper together.  He was always hard working and unbelievably kind.  We had to often work late at school to get the paper to bed.  During this time, he would keep me entertained with his quick wit.  I was so shocked and saddened to hear of his passing.  My thoughts and prayers for his family and friends.

We were team mates on the Hayward Swim Club back in the early 1970’s. Jeff was always cracking jokes as we all waited for our time to race. We were out there shivering with the overcast weather for 2 days of competition at least once a month all year round.  Good times and good stories.

I am shocked at the news, but comforted in the thought that Jeff lived life exactly as it should be lived, on his terms, and would probably explain that in great detail if given the chance.  I will miss you, old friend, and glad that we shared some time together in multiple phases of our life's journey.
