Leoncio was born in Santo Domingo, Nueva Ecija, Philippines on September 12, 1929. He was the second child of Clara de Vera and Marcelo Asuncion. They had a total of 10 children. Leoncio had 4 brothers and 5 sisters.
Leoncio joined the United States Navy as a young adult. Some of his earned military accomplishments were Good Conduct Medals, The National Defense Medal, The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, and letters of appreciation from the Commander in Chief. He served on the Aircraft Carriers USS Bennington CVS-20 and USS Ranger CVA-61. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Whidbey Island, Washington; Great Lakes, Illinois; and SFO Port. His highest rank prior to retiring was “DK1 Disbursing Clerk Petty Officer 1st Class” where he positioned as an Auditor and Leading Petty Officer of the Disbursing Division. In 1973 and after 20 years of active military service, Leoncio finally retired and settled with his family in San Jose, California.
He continued to support his family and worked for the United States Postal Service as a Postal Clerk. He retired from the post office after 18 years.
After his wife, Maria Elizabeth, passed away in 1993, he continued his residence on California ground in the cities of Milpitas, Santa Clara, West Sacramento, San Lorenzo, Hayward, Newark, and Manteca to be his last resting place.
Leoncio’s favorite past times were traveling on cruises with his wife, watching “Boxeo” on TV, going to the casinos, making favorite dishes for his family, playing and spending time with his grandchildren, giving barber haircuts to his grandsons, and repairing household items. He enjoyed teaching his children how to bowl, go fishing, and swim in their younger years. Leoncio loved being behind the wheel and driving anywhere. During his military years and being stationed to different locations, Leoncio drove his family cross country from California to Illinois. Before his retirement, he again drove his family from Illinois to California. Along the way, they spent time sight-seeing and enjoyed the travel.
Leoncio was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Maria Elizabeth, of 34 years, along with siblings Ernie and Junior.
Leoncio is survived by his four children, Edna, Leonard, Lorne, and Lester along with their spouses (Neal, Carrie, Ilene, and Gina), 10 grandchildren (Jennifer, Eric, Aaron, Jayson, Jeremy, Christopher, Josephine, Manolo, Fisher, and Piper), and one great-grandchild (Daniel).
Special thanks to Golden State Home Health Care and Hospice, Kaiser Hospital, and Lima Family Milpitas Fremont Mortuary for caring and allowing for Leoncio to be comfortable throughout the last part of his life.
Also special thanks and extreme gratitude from the Asuncion, Manuta/Teicheira families to all family members and friends who gave up part of their own personal life to care for Leoncio Vera Asuncion. Also, Leoncio’s families extremely appreciate your kind thoughts and gifts.
