Nina Ochoa was born on June 24, 1929 to the parents of Hermanjildo and Epifania Sanchez in a small town in Texas. At the age of one month old, her family moved to Berkeley, California where she grew up. She was seven of twelve children. As a child, she enjoyed being with family and friends. She enjoyed singing in church with her sisters.
At the age of 16 she met and married the love of her life, Lupe Ochoa. They married on November 15, 1945. As a young couple they enjoyed traveling across California on the spur of the moment, whether to visit friends or family members or to simply pick up a favorite cheeseburger in Los Angeles. Nina and Lupe settled in Berkeley, California to be near her family to start their own family. She and her younger sister, Helen, would often go to the local roller derby match, where they would cheer on the Bay Bombers. Nina tried her hand at working but would walk off the job when she grew tired of it. Lupe was very supportive of her staying home with the children. After having ten children they moved to Oakland, where they settled in the Rockridge area. Here she raised a family of thirteen children, Becky, Steven, Herman, Alex, Albert, Debra, Tina, Cooley, Hootnanny, Myra, Manuel, Melinda, and Benji. She loved family outings and going to Disneyland, picnics, hiking, or simply walking through the neighborhood. Not a year went by without her and Lupe taking the children to Disneyland and even adding nieces and nephews to the group. It was a common occurrence that the Reyna family and the Ochoa family joined together on these family outings. Nina was a very good mother and made every effort to have a good dinner on the table every night. She loved to watch food programs and always wrote down recipes. She also loved her novellas and Don Francisco every Saturday. She would always get excited when trips were planned to Reno because she loved those slot machines. Her newest enjoyment was to sing karoke with her children and grandchildren with her best song “Endless Love”. A month before her passing Lupe asked for her hand again in marriage so they now have an everlasting, endless love.
Nina loved to collect dolls and figurines. She took pride in her home and garden; every Halloween and Christmas she took pride in having her home fully decorated for the grandchildren and neighbors. From her little chair perched by the window, she loved to watch people stop and look at her decorated home.
She was the loving grandmother of 28 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She loved babies and enjoyed holding every new grandchild and great-grandchild. Every member of the family felt truly loved by her and blessed to be in a close family as ours.
She has gone home to be with our Lord and Savior on July 30, 2008. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her, and will always have an everlasting impact on our lives.
