

The Greatest Generation has lost one of its most colorful members. Harold Junior Hurst, 94, of Fremont, Ohio passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 24, 2015 at Bay Park Hospital, Oregon, Ohio after a brave fight. He served his country during World War II as a navigator on transport and supply ships. He was awarded the Atlantic War Zone Bar, Pacific War Zone Bar, Combat Bar, and Victory Medal for his service.
Born in Ceylon, Ohio on July 3, 1920 to Harold and Hazel Hurst, he lived most of his life in Fremont, Ohio. Harold graduated from Ross High School, Fremont, Ohio, class of 1939. After graduation, he sailed the seas on commercial ships and graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy on June 13, 1943. He married Johanna Shanahan on April 7, 1947 in Fremont, Ohio. Harold retired from Whirlpool Corp. in 1980 and enjoyed fishing, gardening, history, family, friends and a bargain. He was always ready for a good conversation and a good time.
Harold was very proud of his family, Harold Daniel of Fremont, James (Jackie) of Fremont, and Sandy (Larry) of Woodville. He leaves six grandchildren, Scott (Dr. Adi) Sedlmeier, Todd Sedlmeier, Cory Sedlmeier, Jennifer Hurst, Julie Hurst, and Jena (Justin) Hurst-Wilkerson. He enjoyed his great grandchildren, Christina David, Samantha Sedlmeier, and Nathan Sedlmeier. He is also survived by several nieces and his beloved Aunt Kate.
He was preceded in death by his parents, loyal wife Johanna, and sister, Grace.
The family would like to thank Dr. Adi Sedlmeier for her wonderful care. Also, we thank Bay Park hospital for their care and compassion. We will be forever grateful to Genoa Care Center and their caregivers for their compassionate care and support.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 on Tuesday, January 27th at Keller –Koch -Chudzinski Funeral Home, 416 S. Arch St., Fremont, Ohio. There will be a one hour visitation prior to services on Wednesday, January 28th starting at 10:30am. Burial will follow at St. Ann's Cemetery.
