Leona Mary “Birdie” Laurer, 87, of Fremont passed away on July 4, 2018 with her loving family by her side at Toledo Promedica Hospital. Birdie was born February 24, 1931 in Fremont to the late Edward and Helen (Holmer) Bertsch. On May 8, 1954 she married George Laurer at St Joseph Catholic Church in Fremont. George passed away June 27, 1984.
She was a 1949 graduate of St Joseph High School and a member of St Joseph Catholic Church where she belonged to the Rosary Society and the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. She was a 1952 graduate of St. Vincent’s School of Nursing retiring as a RN in 1991, from Fremont Memorial Hospital OB Department after 29 years of service. While there she conducted Expectant Parenting Classes for 17 years. She was past President of the Fremont Council for Catholic Nurses and was a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer. Birdie was a member of the Ballville Volunteer Fire Dept Auxiliary, the Fremont Christian Women’s Club, Memorial Hospital Golden Threads, Memorial Hospital Retirees, Sandusky County Seniors and St. Vincent Alumni Association. She also conducted “Let's Talk Grand Parenting” classes at Memorial Hospital. Birdie enjoyed entering her prized elderberry pies in the Sandusky County Fair along with her many canned goods.
Birdie shined on the 4th of July for many years leading parades at Camp Yukita and her summer cottage at Riverfront Marina.
Children include Steven (Lydia) Laurer of Fremont, Jeffrey (Debi) Laurer of Fremont, Scott (Deb) Laurer of Fremont, Thomas (Cathi) of Catawba, Timothy (Liz) of Perrysburg and Gregory (Lori) of Fremont; brother Don Bertsch of Fremont; Grandchildren: Courtney, Nicholas, Adam, Jacob, Amanda, Zachary, Austin, Isaac, Grant, Caleb, Brock, Logan, step-grandchildren Andrea, Jeremy, Sonja and Peyton. Great Grandchildren Antonio, Amayha, Camden, Kinslee and River.
She was proceeded in death by Grandchild Heather Laurer and Sister in Law Jean Bertsch
Visitation will be held on Monday July 9 from 2-8pm at Keller-Koch-Chudzinski Funeral Home, 416 South Arch Street Fremont.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 10:00a.m. from St Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Roemmele officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
