Andy was the 3rd out of 6 children born to Ching Po Wong and Siu Wah Lin. His career began in education, where he taught PE and music in China. In his early 30’s, Andy moved to Hong Kong, where he began his career in cooking. There, he met the love of his life, Betty, whom he married in Vancouver, Canada, two years after immigrating to the United States in 1970.
In 1973, Andy cofounded his first restaurant, Peking Restaurant in Oakland’s Chinatown, which became a milestone for his career in the Central Valley. In 1983, he and Betty opened China Garden Buffet where they proudly served the Selma community. Andy and Betty shared a profound love for each other and a deep dedication to build a successful business for over 35 years, until he retired in 2020.
Andy and Betty were blessed with two children: their daughter Christina in May of 1973, and their son Alan in May of 1976. Andy's family was his pride and joy, and he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather to his five grandchildren: Sydney, Kelly, Chloe, Ethan, and Breanna.
Throughout his life, Andy was a vibrant member of the Chinese community actively participating in various clubs to support cultural initiatives. He was a founding member of the Central California Chinese Cultural Association, Wong’s Association, Chong Wah Chinese Benevolent Association, and Jung Ying Association. Outside of work, Andy had many hobbies, including
teaching Tai Chi, singing in the church choir, watching basketball, and attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Andy leaves a legacy of hard work, perseverance, community service, and dedication to his family.
