Ann Wier passed away peacefully in her sleep from natural causes on Wednesday, November 16th. She was 89 years old. She was born in Fresno on March 29, 1927 to Samuel and Frances Astorino, and she is survived by her only son, Wane Darin Wier. She is preceded in death by her sister Vivian Mulhern and her brother Donald Astorino.
Ann graduated from Fresno State University and obtained her teaching credentials in 1949. She taught elementary school locally until 1954, when she became a US Navy Civilian federal employee, teaching at various overseas military bases. Her new job brought her to Japan, Morocco, Italy, Cuba, and eventually Puerto Rico in 1964. It was during the transition from Cuba to Puerto Rico that she became a Vice Principal.
Puerto Rico was also where she married her husband, Ward Wane Wier; they had met previously in Guantamino Bay. In the 1970’s she continued her formal education and obtained both her Master’s Degree and her PhD. Shortly afterwards, she co-authored 14 Language Arts elementary school text books, and also went on to become a Title IX Officer and EEO Coordinator for the Antilles School System in Puerto Rico.
Ann loved Puerto Rico, and never transferred after she moved there. After a total of 44 years as a US Navy Civilian, she retired, and in 2010 moved to Escondido, CA to be close to her son and daughter-in-law, Ariadna Sanchez-Wier. Ann lived life to the fullest. She loved her family, and her family loved her. She will always be missed.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to the American Veterans Foundation or your favorite charity in Ann Wier’s name.
