Howard “Sonny” Gaynor, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on May 20, 2025, at the age of 86. Born and raised in Fresno, California, Sonny lived his entire life in the place he loved most, surrounded by family, friends, and memories. From a young age, Sonny was known for his outgoing, likable, and charismatic personality—a trait that stayed with him throughout his life. He grew up in the West family, spending many joyful childhood summers at Bass Lake, creating memories with all of his cousins.
Sonny graduated from Fresno High School in 1957 and went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Navy in 1960. He attended the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps School and proudly served as a Hospital Corpsman aboard the USS Hancock, including a memorable assignment in Japan. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal before his honorable discharge in 1963.
Upon returning home to Fresno, Sonny began a new chapter, starting a family and building a successful career in sales that spanned over 50 years. His friendly nature and gift for connecting with people made him a fixture in the local community.
Outside of work, Sonny lived a full life. He shared 38 wonderful years with his devoted wife, Joyce. A true car enthusiast, he took great pride in his beautifully restored 1957 Chevy Nomad Wagon and was an active member of the Hot Rods of Fresno. Sonny loved attending car shows, watching IndyCar races, riding his Harley Davidson, and cultivating his stunning bonsai-inspired yard—a passion sparked during his time in Japan.
A meticulous man, Sonny cared deeply for the things he loved—his vehicles, his garden, and his family. His home was a reflection of his dedication and his warm, generous spirit. Sonny was the kind of person who made everyone feel welcome, and his charm and kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Sonny is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; children Michelle and Michael; daughter-in-law Shawnessy; stepdaughter Joni and her husband Tim; his brother Jerry; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many other cherished family members and dear friends.
Sonny Gaynor will be deeply missed, but the love, laughter, and legacy he leaves behind will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
