Isabel was born in Oxnard, CA on November 9, 1913 to Dorothy (Dodie) and Charles (Charley) Covarrubias, the middle child to four loving, mischievous brothers. She loved to dance and watch her brothers and father, the local harness maker, play baseball. She graduated from Oxnard High School and went on to work at Security First National Bank, where her son Robert started his career 46 years later. Isabel was a 7th generation Californian and her great grandfather, Jose Maria Covarrubias, was a member of the Constitutional Congress of California and was an original signor of the California Constitution. At one time, Isabel's family owned the land attached to Mission Santa Ines, the Alisal Guest Ranch in Solvang CA, and the Island of Santa Catalina.
Isabel was married on May 21, 1951 to Jerome (Jerry) Noel Griffin in Las Vegas NV. and returned to live on the Taylor Ranch in Ventura, CA where Jerome owned and operated Griffin Cattle Co. until 1971. Though she was a member of several volunteer groups while in Ventura, Isabel's main focus in life was as a wife and mother, which she did with so much love and success. She was proud to be beside Jerome, building long-standing relationships with the Micky and Ralph Gragg and Erma and Bob Smith families. While living in Solvang and Oxnard later in life, she enjoyed buying and decorating a new home every three years, or so it seemed to Jerry who was left with putting in the landscaping.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Isabel will be missed by those who love her and who have the promise of being reunited one day in a place called heaven.
Isabel was preceded in death by her parents Dodie and Charley, husband Jerome, daughter Kathleen Griffin, granddaughter Lynn Griffin, and brothers Mason, Glenn, Allen, and Robert Covarrubias. She is survived by children Martha (Sue) Holt, Robert Griffin and wife Soyla, Mary Fox, Elizabeth Gaynor, and Michael Griffin and wife Joan. Isabel is also survived by grandchildren Michael, Haley, and Jesse Holt; Dr. Nichole Flores and Rory Griffin; Kathy Hamilton, Lori Blackburn, and Michelle Griffin; Ginny Tyler; and Greg Clary, Christie Hodgson, Susie Biller, Rick Clary, and Julie Strong; many great-grandchildren, and nephew Charles (Chuck) Covarrubias.
A funeral service will be held at Whitehurst Funeral Chapel on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Internment will follow on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the King City Cemetery at 10:00 a.m.
