John dedicated much of his life to the craft and community of photography through his remarkable fifty-one-year career at Horn Photo Shop in Fresno. He began working there in 1952 at just 13 years old, assisting after school and during the summers. In 1960, he became a partner alongside his Uncle Pete and his brother, Reuben. The business later welcomed his nephew, Brad Horn, as a partner in 1971. John continued his leadership at the shop when it came under new ownership, serving as general manager from 1991 until his retirement in 2003. His dedication, work ethic, and passion for the profession left a lasting imprint on colleagues and customers alike.
A 1956 graduate of Roosevelt High School, John was actively involved in student life, participating in the photography club, chess club, and marching band; early reflections of the curiosity and discipline that would define his life.
John also proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Specialist 5 (SP5); he received an honorable discharge in 1964.
He shared over sixty years of marriage with his beloved wife and high school sweetheart, Barbara, until her passing in 2021. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and community.
A devoted member of the Visalia community, John was actively involved with the Visalia Gleaning Seniors, RiverCross Church, and numerous other volunteer organizations that served individuals and families throughout the Central Valley. His generosity of spirit and willingness to help others touched many lives.
John is survived by his three children; Richard (& Jean) Horn of Claremont, CA, Sharon (& Mark) Gable of Oxford, FL, and Lisa Harmon of Visalia, CA. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A public Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1084 W. Bullard Avenue, Fresno, CA 93711.
John will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to his family, his profession, and his community; his life stands as a testament to hard work, service, and enduring love.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in John's memory to one of his favorite organizations, the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (Central California Chapter):https://www.ahsgrfr-centralcal.com/
