Vernon was born and raised in Texas, where he met Patsy, got married and started his family. They moved to California in 1951. He worked at the Zacky Farms Feed Mill on Palm & H Streets for over 43 years under various business names. He started out sewing feed sacks, then to driving trucks and working in the mill as a dispatch and transportation supervisor before he retired.
Vernon enjoyed bowling, golf, square dancing, watching sports, playing dominos or a game of cards.
Dad was involved with his kids through church, coaching baseball, Indian guides and maidens and camping. Dad provided strength and character as a role model and loving father to his children and grandchildren.
Papa (Poppy) was a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved seeing his "kids" as much as possible even if only for a minute to get a hug and kiss on the cheek. Papa was always willing to share his peanut butter or "SOP" with his kids even when it meant he had to make more for himself.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Patsy; two sisters: Irene Walker and Juanita Giles, both of Saginaw Texas; five children and their spouses: Vickie and Harold Schneider from German Town Tennessee, Michael and Gail Norman of Caruthers Ca., Kathryn and George Cordero of Clovis Ca., Tracey and Mark Ramirez of Kingsburg Ca., and Christopher and Frances Norman of Clovis, Ca. Thirteen grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren in California, Texas, Tennessee and Mississippi. In-laws who were more like true sisters and brothers: Nina Bradford, Diane West, Kathryn Turpin, Joe Williams, and John Williams; and many nieces and nephews.
