Dr. Michael “Mick” Gromis, age 77, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on February 9, 2026 in Fresno, California. He was a dedicated primary care physician, a true friend to his patients and staff, and a man whose generosity, warmth, and signature zest touched everyone who knew him.
For nearly 50 years, Dr. Gromis practiced medicine in Fresno, where he was known for his dedication but also for the way he treated his patients as friends. He invested in and was proud of the positive working relationships with his employees over four decades. His commitment to caring for others extended far beyond his office walls, and his patients often spoke of his humor and kindness. He loved his vocation as a doctor and served patients until the day before he passed.
A gregarious spirit, Dr. Gromis loved connecting with people from all walks of life. He had an adventurous heart and found great joy in traveling the world, learning about new cultures, and sharing stories from his journeys spiced with a heavy dose of superlatives. Despite (or maybe because of his adventures near and far) at home he never passed on a good old peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Dr. Gromis found great joy in gifting to others, and a thrill in finding a great deal. Many were lucky enough to receive one of Dr. Gromis’s heartfelt and quirky limericks or poems memorializing a milestone in their lives. Through these literary gifts he bestowed humor, wisdom and emotion using sometimes questionable figurative language and always a generous rhyme.
He loved and was so proud of his family. He is survived by his fiancé and partner of 14 years, Kristi McLaughlin, his three children—Reid Gromis (his wife, Laura), Emily Ochoa (her husband, David), and Thomas Gromis (his partner, Jasmine)—and six grandchildren: Elliot, Julianna, Lillian, Molly, Timo, and Rowan. He is also survived by his brother, David Gromis, and a circle of family, friends and colleagues who will miss his laughter, wisdom, and generous heart.
A celebration of Dr. Gromis’s life will be held at Whitehurst Sullivan Burns & Blair Funeral Home in Fresno, located at 836 E Nees Ave, Fresno, CA 93720, on March 2nd, 2026 at 12:00 with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Fresno Rescue Mission in his memory.
Dr. Gromis lived a life defined by humor, curiosity, and generosity. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched.
