At the time of his death, Tony was the President of Fresno City College, a position he proudly held since April 3, 2012. Previously, he had served as Interim President, VP of Instruction, and Dean of Humanities at FCC. He was also the Dean of Instruction at Reedley College. Tony was respected for his integrity, honesty and no-nonsense style of leadership. He enjoyed being an administrator, but he also loved the time he spent as a teacher and mentor to his students. Tony earned his Master of Arts in Linguistics ESL from CSU, Fresno. He also earned his Master of Arts in French and a dual Bachelor of Arts in French and Spanish from CSU, Long Beach. He was an incredibly generous proponent of individuals pursuing their education.
Tony was a dedicated family man and devoted man of God. He visited his mother, Maria every day and he opened his home to many nieces and nephews over the years as they pursued their goals and dreams. His warm, gentle heart was always felt through his hugs and kisses. Tony was blessed with so many gifts. He was an avid reader and loved languages, literature, art and music. He was a talented chef often concocting a gourmet meal from whatever ingredients he had in the refrigerator. Tony enjoyed traveling as much as he enjoyed spending the day with a friend or family member. He not only loved a good laugh, he also had a great laugh. He was an excellent listener and would give sound advice if asked to do so. Tony also loved to dance and truly enjoyed life. A close colleague of his appropriately referred to him as a true Renaissance man.
The Cantú family would like to express their gratitude to the State Center Community College District, Chancellor Bill F. Stewart, the Board of Trustees as well as the Fresno City College administration, staff, faculty and students.
