Born to Vincent and Annie on January 5, 1940, in Fresno, CA, Richard was raised by his mother and grandparents in West Fresno. As the eldest of 3 boys, and without a father in the home, Richard was compelled to assume the role of protector and guardian for his family. As a young man his character was shaped by the close and loving relationships he had with his uncles, aunts, and cousins, which he maintained throughout his life.
In 1961 Richard met the love of his life, Kathie, while working at Harry Coffee’s. During their 59 years of marriage, they were blessed with 4 children, 7 grandchildren and a recent addition of a great-grandchild. He was also proud to be a surrogate father and grandfather to the daughter and granddaughter of a dear friend who had passed away in 2005.
After graduating from Fresno State University, Richard worked for the city of Fresno as Deputy City Manager where he was instrumental in the creation of the Handy Ride program and establishing the Port of Entry. During his career, Richard also worked for Mobile Oil Corp, Guarantee Savings and Loan, as a mortgage banker, and as a small business owner of Sign Systems. Richard was active in several civic clubs including the Civic Optimist Club where he served as president, Optimist Boy’s Club, Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, and Bulldog Foundation.
Richard is survived by his wife Kathie, Daughters Karrie Stemler, Kelley Sanchez and husband Peter, Katie Baker and husband Doug, son Ryan, grandchildren Alyssa, Allie, Lindsie, Karlie, Macie, Sydnie, Blakelie, Presley, great grandchild Noah, and brothers Alexander and Gerald.
