Born on July 2, 1935, in Plattsburg, Missouri, to parents James and Beulah, Robert was taught to live a life full of dedication, love, and service. After graduating from high school, Robert embarked on a distinguished career in the United States Air Force. He served as an Air Training Command Instructor and achieved the rank of E7, Master Sergeant. His twenty years of honorable service included tours in Korea, The Philippines, and Vietnam, with additional duty stations in Germany, where he bought and shipped a Volkswagen back to the States for himself, and France, where he would take hunting trips with French farmers.
During his time overseas, Robert developed a passion for photography and learned to speak French. After retiring from the Air Force, he pursued further education at Fresno City College, taking classes in business administration and photography, furthering his passions. Robert's career continued as he worked as an automotive mechanic for the Housing Authorities of Fresno, later transitioning to a fulfilling career as a Maintenance Specialist for HUD. His dedication and work ethic were evident in every role he undertook.
In the summer of 1964, Robert met his loving wife, Carol, while stationed temporarily in Fresno, California at the Air National Guard Base. Their marriage of over sixty years was marked by love, adventure, and the joy of raising their four children: James, Timothy, Thomas, and Kimberly. Together, they lived in various states across the country, making homes in Missouri, Alabama, Washington, Montana, South Carolina, Arizona, Michigan, and more before eventually settling down in Fresno. Robert and Carol were also eventually blessed with five grandchildren: Samuel, Audrey, Kayley, Kyleigh, and Robert, whom they absolutely adored.
Bob, as he was affectionately known, had a wide range of interests, including hunting, reloading ammunition, bird watching, photography, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid reader, particularly of The Bible, favoring the King James Version, although he would often read from seven different translations to compare notes between them. Bob also cherished his monthly breakfasts with his friends, where they shared stories and laughter, catching each other up on their daily lives, grandchildren, and more over good food and even better coffee.
Robert's personal qualities left a lasting legacy. He loved sunny days and being outdoors, and spending time with his family. Robert's favorite music was gospel, and his favorite color was blue. He enjoyed watching black and white westerns, with "The Great Outdoors" and "The Pink Panther" being among his favorite films. Robert's affection for Carol was profound. Nothing made him happier than sitting with her, reminiscing about their lives together, telling stories and sharing laughs. Their children and grandchildren often talk about the incredible love and connection between them, even in his final days as Carol cared for him.
Bob's faith in Jesus Christ was central to his life. He is remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father. He instilled in his family the belief that happiness is essential and that better days are always ahead. His words, "You have to be happy, happy is the only way to be," remain a lasting testament to his positive outlook on life.
A graveside service for Robert will be held at Clovis Cemetery District, located at 305 N Villa Avenue, Clovis, California, on September 25, 2025, at 10:00 am. All who knew and loved Robert are welcomed to attend.
