Robert J. "Bob" Knebel, 97, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, in Fresno, California. Born on August 28, 1928, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Robert and Frances Knebel, Bob lived a life marked by service, dedication, and love of family.
After graduating from high school, Bob proudly served his country for two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his military service, he utilized the GI Bill to attend Santa Clara University, where he graduated as a proud Bronco with a degree in engineering.
Bob began a distinguished 40-year career with Pacific Gas and Electric Company as an entry-level engineer. Through hard work and dedication, he advanced through pipeline construction and operations, ultimately serving as Regional Gas Manager of the San Joaquin Region. His career took him throughout California, including San Francisco, Kettleman, Bakersfield, Barstow, and Chico, before retiring in Fresno in 1992. Over the decades, PG&E became an extension of Bob's family through the deep and lasting friendships he forged with countless colleagues.
Through a cousin, Bob met the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betty" Weaver. They were married on June 6, 1953, and shared 62 wonderful years together until Betty's passing on September 3, 2015. Together, they raised five children while building a life through numerous moves up and down California.
In retirement, Bob and Betty traveled extensively to visit family and pursue Bob's passion for golf. Bob remained active in his community, joining SIR and the Engineers Society, and volunteering with the Fresno ARC and Tree Fresno. He took great pride in tending his yard, particularly his orange trees, which produced fruit revered by all fortunate enough to taste them.
Throughout his life, Bob embraced hard work, discipline, and planning. In his final years, he continued to view life as both a project and a learning experience, remaining an avid reader until his vision no longer permitted it. He placed great emphasis on family, cherishing Sunday night Zoom sessions with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his sister, Carolyn Merritt of Rancho Palos Verdes; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Ruth Knebel of Wenatchee, Washington; sons Bob Knebel of Santa Rosa, Paul Knebel and Mike Knebel, both of Fresno; daughter Karen Ward of Chico; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Betty, daughter Patricia, and four siblings.
A Private Family Graveside Service is being held and a Celebration of Life Funeral will be held at a later date.
