Gretel Heitler Morgan was born on October 29, 1923, to the late Collete Heitler and Wilhelmina Kemp in Belize City, British Honduras. She died peacefully at the Carrollton Regional Medical Center in Carrollton, Texas, on September 28, 2024, at the magnificent age of 100+ years.
Gretel experienced a major childhood event at the age of 7 when she survived a major hurricane in Belize on September 10, 1931. Her survivor spirit would remain in her for the rest of her life. At the age of 25, she migrated from Belize to the United States in 1949 and worked for the Charbonnet family in New Orleans, LA. Later, she moved on to work for an American clothing factory. Her hard work continued thereafter at St. Mary's Academy working in the school cafeteria. Gretel was well known by students and faculty for her homemade pies, buttery smooth fudge, brownies, cinnamon rolls, and Mexican wedding cakes. Gretel retired from St. Mary's Academy in 1983.
Gretel met the love of her life, Andrew Morgan, in 1949, and later married in 1950. They were married for 32 years, until he transitioned to his heavenly home on October 1, 1982. They had 8 children, one son, Ernest P. Morgan (Raphael), Irving, TX,; and seven daughters; Dillis M. George (Adam-deceased), Frisco, TX, Sandra M. Faciane (Julian-Deceased), Frisco, TX, the late Audrey M. Burton, Irmo, S.C., the late Haidee Morgan, Brandon, Fl, Eva M. Smith (Kenneth, Sr.), Carrollton, TX, Yolanda M. Laurent (Terry deceased), Frisco, TX, and Gretchen M. Galman (Victor), Jacksonville, FL. She is also survived by 1O grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Gretel relocated to the Dallas, TX, area following the events of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She was saved at an early age and attended various Christian churches. With each home relocation, her faithful commitment to church was an integral part of her life. It was a joy for her to serve the Lord. Her last church membership would be at the Potter's House North Dallas, Frisco, TX, where she worshipped for over ten years and was known as Mother Gretel. She always put the Lord first in her life, and everyone knew that fact about her. She was a faithful covenant partner of Faith Walk Christian Ministry, TBN, Our Daily Bread and Charles Stanley Ministries. She has impacted many lives during her life's journey.
Gretel spent most of her adult life raising and caring for her children enjoying family life. She volunteered for school and church events. She enjoyed crochet, word search puzzles and watching a good movie along with playing all types of games such as Bingo, Pokeno, various board games and socializing with family and friends. Mother Morgan was a proud member of the New Orleans Saints "Who Dat Nation".
Gretel was asked frequently, "What is your secret to making it to 100 years, a centenarian?" Her reply would always be, "I worked hard." Yes, she did! She worked hard and spent much time raising her children and setting the example to do the same. She laid a good spiritual foundation for them. She was "energetic and strong, a hard worker." Pro 31:17
Gretel's earthly journey has come to an end, but her legacy will live on through the many lives she has touched. We will miss her dearly, but we take comfort in knowing that she is now in the loving embrace of her eternal Father. The memories she has created will sustain us, and we will find peace knowing that she is home.
