I.V. Ferguson was a Texan, born and bred. His family came to Texas in 1848. He was born on October 16, 1932 in the West Texas town of Lamesa. I.V. spent his childhood and school years there with his parents and four siblings, sisters Pauline and Nelva and twin brothers Harold and Carroll. He had fond memories of days in the local Boy Scout troop and working a variety of jobs. After high school he and two friends joined the Army. He served in the Korean War as a radar operator in Golden Gate Park and on South Korea’s northern border achieving the rank of Sergeant. He often said Korea was the coldest he had felt in his entire life.
Upon his return, he enrolled at Texas Tech in Lubbock and took courses year-round to graduate early. He met Lynn Lee Busby at Texas Tech, and they married in 1957 in Midland, TX. They had two daughters, Leslie Lynn and Laurie Lee. He began work at Texas Employment Commission where he served in different capacities in several Texas cities. I.V. was Director of the Dallas Region for 20 years. As a Director, he was a tremendous mentor and well-respected manager to many people until he retired in 1996.
I.V. was a great friend to many and had a gift for enduring relationships – many of his friendships spanned decades. He was an avid hunter who initiated a 40-year annual dove hunt in Paducah, Texas. He enjoyed hunting dove, quail, deer and turkey on different leases and on his place in Hico. I.V. enjoyed collecting pistols, long guns and knives. He wore Lucchese boots and Resistol hats all his adult life. After retirement he added jeans and suspenders to his daily dress. While he was a resident at Sunrise of Frisco, he was nicknamed ‘Cowboy’. I.V. loved old Western movies particularly those starring “The Duke”, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. He also enjoyed listening to country-western music and was a Texas history buff. He loved watching sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks and his Texas Tech Red Raiders.
I.V. passed away March 1, 2019 in Frisco, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents Ima and Isom Ferguson, his wife Lynn, his daughter Leslie, his sister Pauline Crawford, his brother Carroll and nephew Cory.
Left to cherish his memory are daughter and son-in-law Laurie and Gary Yeamans of Frisco, TX, sister and brother-in-law Nelva and Kay Dunbar of Weatherford, OK, brother and sister-in-law Harold and Mary Ferguson of Hico, TX, Penny Johnson of Dripping Springs, TX and many other relatives and friends.
