John McCurdy Van der Wiel was born December 24, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Jacob and Jean Van der Wiel. Devoted husband and father (to son and three dogs), John was a principled man who lived to take care of the ones he loved. He was unwavering in his commitment to his wife, Myrtle, and nursed her in illness for 15 years before her passing. His son, Jacob, was his pride and joy and their deep bond provided them both with strength and energy for life. After Jacob moved away for college, John's three dogs (Pedro, Percy, and Plato) became his closest companions and are very thankful for his perfectly cooked steak dinners paired with their favorite ice water. John is survived and deeply missed by his son (Jacob), sisters (Lucy Van der Wiel Miller and Grace Van der Wiel), brother (Don Van der Wiel), sister-in-law (Yvette Van der Wiel), brother-in-law (Craig Hines), nieces (McCurdy Miller, Kate Hines and Brooke Van der Wiel), nephews (Robert Hinesand Scott Van der Wiel), and three furry companions.
