Karen Denise Bonner Peters passed away on Sunday January 5, 2025 in Frisco, Texas. She was born October 1, 1957 in Leslie, West Virginia to Edward Dixon Bonner and Katie Woods Bonner. Both parents were professors at Gadsden State University and her father was also a pastor.
Karen grew up in Gadsden, Alabama and graduated from Talladega College in 1979. She was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as was her mother Katie, sister Belinda, niece Lindsay, sister-in-law Sheila, and great aunt Nell. After graduation, Karen taught school briefly then joined AT&T in Atlanta before transferring to New Jersey where she lived for several years. From there, Karen transferred to Dallas in the late 1980’s where she worked at AT&T’s Preston Rd location for the next 12 years. It was here where she met her future husband, Mark, in 1998. To this day, Mark still loves to tell the story of how they first met, became good friends then eventually started dating in 2000.
Karen was a project manager at AT&T, Game Stop, Verizon, Sogeti and Microsoft before retiring in 2019. She was a valuable asset to every team for which she was a part of, and always a favorite among her fellow employees due to her smiling face, positive attitude, and genuine care for others. Her attributes were displayed even more profoundly with family and friends. One of Karen’s most notable traits was that she always looked for a reason to compliment people and make them feel good about themselves, even complete strangers! She treated everyone with the same high level of dignity and respect.
Karen and Mark were wed on September 6, 2013 in Carmel, CA, and enjoyed a magical marriage that grew stronger and sweeter with each passing day. They loved to attend family gatherings, travel to vacation destinations, or just enjoy a weekend getaway. But mostly, they enjoyed each other’s company more than anything else.
Karen’s main interests were shopping, she was very classy and stylish! She loved Louis Vuitton, Burberry, wearing her mother’s pearls, and dressed to the nines for all occasions. She also enjoyed watching cooking shows and creating fabulous meals which Mark called, “Karen’s Kreations.” She could always go to the fridge and pantry and ‘make something out of nothing.’
She was a very giving person by sharing her time and creativity with others and donated regularly to her church and the American Cancer Society, among other organizations. She was the kindest, most loving, and caring person in the world and is already missed by all who know her. Karen may be physically gone from Earth and resting in Heaven, but she will live forever in our hearts.
Karen is survived by her husband, Mark Peters; sister Belinda Reddick and husband, Tony; brother Eddie Bonner and wife, Sheryl; brother Edward Barge and wife, Sheila; niece Lindsay Harden and husband, William; nephew Evan Reddick and wife, Carla; two great nephews and one great niece; stepdaughter Baillie Peters.
There will be two Celebration of Life services for Karen – the first Celebration will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Stonebriar Funeral Home in Frisco, Texas.
The second celebration will be in her hometown of Gadsden, AL on Saturday February 1, 2025. (Location and time still pending)
