Max grew up with his younger brother in the small town of Graham, Oklahoma. After graduating from Dundee High School in 1949, he went on to proudly serve his country in United States Navy. He fought bravely in the Korean War and was stationed at both San Diego Naval Station and the Alaska Naval Service in the Aleutian Islands. After his honorable discharge, in 1955, he followed his passion for knowledge he went on to attend Southwestern State and in 1961 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. During this time, him and his high school sweetheart, Nancy, continued to date for four years, and in 1959 they became man and wife and stayed married for over 62 years.
Max has a long successful career as a petroleum engineer with Sinclair/Arco, upon retiring he was able to truly devote himself to his family and even pursue some hidden talents, like sculpting, painting, making jewelry and customs knives. He enjoyed working at the farm and or the lake house on Texoma and liked the beach at Galveston and driving the back roads of TX and OK. He loved dove hunting, camping/scouting and fishing at ANY fishing hole he could find. Max even could be caught singing karaoke, and was able to sing at his son, Kelly's wedding. He relaxed by watching Smokey and the Bandit...all of them, Pink Panther...all of them. And he loved listening to Elvis, Red Skelton, Johnny Carson and John Wayne, and was also a big country and western fan...Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash.
He will forever be remembered by his family and his friends as a friendly, generous and always
willing to teach or give of his time. He coached his son in football and in baseball and never told us
“you can't” or “you shouldn't” but always “let's see how we can make it happen” or “let us help
you achieve success”. Max was an inspiration to all who knew him, and proudly mentored several Eagle Scouts in his scout troop in West Texas.
Max is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Flora Wilkins and his brother, Ronald Wilkins and his wife Shirley.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 62 years, Nancy Wilkins; his sons, Kelly D Wilkins and his wife Laura, Lane K Wilkins and his wife Michelle; and his daughter, Rona Malone and her husband Derrick; and his grandchildren, Mitchell T., Marcee, and Mckinlee; and his nephew Mitchell D. Wilkins.
A celebration of life for Max will be held Friday, December 3, 2021 at 10:30 AM at Stonebriar Funeral Home, 10375 Preston Rd., Frisco, Texas 75034.
