Mike lived a life filled with adventure, creativity, service, and generosity. He proudly served in the United States Army, where he earned decorations as Marksman (Rifle) and Expert (Grenade), along with four Letters of Commendation. He deeply loved serving his country and carried that pride throughout his life.
After his military service, Mike attended the Texas Institute of Jewelry Technology School and went on to build a remarkable entrepreneurial career. He opened his own jewelry store, where he became known for creating beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces that reflected both his craftsmanship and imagination. Over the years, Mike also owned a pawn shop and even an ostrich ranch — proof of his fearless spirit, endless curiosity, and determination to follow his dreams wherever they led.
Mike loved the outdoors and found great joy in hunting and fishing. He was known by family and friends as funny, kind, smart, and gentle-hearted. He had a unique ability to make people laugh, feel welcome, and know they mattered. After his passing, countless stories emerged of the quiet ways he had helped others through difficult times — acts of generosity he never spoke about and never expected recognition for. That was simply who Mike was.
Above all else, Mike was a devoted son, a loving big brother and best friend to his brother and sister, and a loyal friend to many. His presence brought comfort, laughter, and strength to those fortunate enough to know him.
Mike was preceded in death by his brother, Daniel M. Mooty; his grandparents, OT and Mae Sims. He is survived by his loving mother, Anita M. Gentry; his sister, Janet M. Mooty; and numerous cousins and cherished friends who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
A VA Memorial Service will be held at a later date and announced when arrangements are finalized. A Celebration of Life at Rockwall Lake will also be held at a later date.
Mike’s life was a testament to service, hard work, compassion, and love for others. Though he will be deeply missed, the stories, laughter, kindness, and memories he leaves behind will continue to live on in all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mike’s memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
