Nicholas Paul Politz was born October 28, 1978 in Shreveport, Louisiana. As a young boy, he was drawn to the outdoors. Whether it was deer and turkey hunting with his grandfather, father, uncles and cousins or experiences in the Boy Scouts, you didn’t have to coax Nick to go outside. He eventually earned the rank of Eagle Scout. That achievement and the love he developed for firearms as a young man proved to be important precursors to his military service.
That service began soon after he graduated from Captain Shreve High School. Nick enlisted in the United States Navy in 1997 and was serving when the Twin Towers fell on September 11, 2001. Weeks later, he was sent to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where his squadron conducted bombing runs for 110 straight days. After returning home, he was honorably discharged following four years of Naval service.
For most people that would have been enough, but Nick felt called to do more. In 2004, he joined the United States Marines and was called to active duty during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Nick was involved in ground combat during some of the war’s bloodiest battles. Though these were some of the most challenging periods of his life, Nick developed lasting friendships that would continue well beyond the field of battle.
While one would look at Nick’s life and label him an American hero, he would prefer to be remembered as a loving husband who adored his two children. After returning from Iraq, he married Sara Beth Morgan on March 18, 2006. Beth describes the 14 years they were married as “absolutely wonderful” and full of moments that kept them both laughing.
Nick’s life was forever enriched when Christian and Sophia made him a father. He loved snuggles with his “monkey” and playing games with his “little man.” To his two children, Nick leaves behind a legacy of strength, courage, and the ultimate example of what it means to walk in the footsteps of Christ and live a life of service.
Nick passed away September 4, 2020 with his wife and mother by his side following a courageous battle with colon cancer.
Nick is survived by his parents Bennett and Debra; spouse Beth and children; Christian and Sophia; grandmothers Opal D. Jeansonne and Jane Politz; father-in-law Frank Morgan; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Nick is preceded in death by his younger sister Jeanne Marie; grandfathers Vernon Jeansonne and Henry Politz; and mother-in-law Evelyn Morgan.
