Melvin Louis Jordan

Melvin Louis Jordan, 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 18, 2017 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD. He was born in Flint Hill, VA on November 9, 1934 to the late James and Margaret Adams Jordan. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 31 years, Eleanor Russell Jordan in 1992. Melvin attended George Washington Carver High School where he played the trombone in the band. Melvin was also a gifted athlete. He played football, basketball and was the catcher for the baseball team. Melvin was an avid sports fan as well. He enjoyed watching and cheering for his local sports teams especially the Washington Redskins. Melvin served in the U.S. Army for two tours. He was in the Artillery Division during the Korean Conflict and was very proud to be a Veteran. When he returned home, Melvin worked with D.A. Foster Construction, Washington Metropolitan Transportation Authority in Washington, DC and Avtex Fibers in Front Royal, VA until it closed in 1989. He finished his working years as a funeral attendant with Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home located in Front Royal, Va. Melvin was a church member at Macedonia Baptist Church since the age of 9. He was a trustee and a 32nd degree Mason. Melvin was a faithfully working member of the church and a dedicated servant to the Lord. He loved his church and his church family. Melvin loved people. He never met anyone with whom he could not hold a conversation. Everyone who entered into his life became family. He had a warm and welcoming spirit that was second to none. His sense of humor was always present even during his illness. He was jokingly called “The Mayor of Huntly” because he knew all the people and all the “business”. In addition to his sense of humor, Melvin enjoyed telling stories. Regardless of the situation, he always had one for you. He spoke of old times and people with such passion and clarity that made you feel as if you had gone back in time and was a part of the story. With his toothy smile and hearty laugh, Melvin entertained us all. Melvin loved his family and they loved him back. The love was unconditional and sincere. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be very much missed by everyone. In addition to his parents and wife, Melvin was preceded in death by his brothers James Jordan and Milton Jordan. He is survived by his wife, Mollie Slaughter Jordan; his sons, Enoch Hughes and wife Deborah of Philadelphia, PA and Anthony Jordan of Washington, DC; his daughters, Valerie Foote and husband Clifford of New Carrollton, MD; Mary McClees and husband Nathaniel of Beltsville, MD, Karen Jordan of Beltsville, MD and; his sister, Irmeshen Starks of Astoria, NY; his grandchildren, Tumekia Thomas, Lauren Hughes, Melissa Hughes, Malisa Easterling, and William Ragland; his four great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
