Carolyn L. Spitz, 85, of Windsor, CO, joined our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on July 16, 2022. Carol Spitz, daughter of Doris Landon and Harry Davis, loving husband of Laverne Spitz, passed away peacefully at Columbine Commons Rehabilitation Center in Windsor, CO after succumbing to numerous health issues.
Carol was born in Elmira, New York on March 21, 1937, and was raised with her sister Sally and brothers Richard and Dale. While in her senior year in high school, Carol, who was 17 at the time, met her soon to be husband, Vern, who was in the US Air Force stationed at Sampson AFB in Geneva, New York. They spent many nights at the USO dancing and playing cards with friends. Carol and Vern were married in Geneva on January 22, 1955. During the 20 years that Vern was in the Air Force, Carol and Vern traveled the world with their 3 sons Bill, Tom, and Chris. They lived in Okinawa, Japan for 3 years, Paris, France for 2 years, and Stuttgart, Germany for a year. While in Europe, where Vern was attached to NATO, they regularly traveled all over France and Germany and to England, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, and Austria making lasting memories. While in the United States, Carol and Vern lived in New York (where Bill and Tom were born), Denver, CO, Altus, OK (where Chris was born), Cheyenne, WY, Omaha, NE, and finally Westover, MA where Vern retired from the Air Force in 1973.
In 1972, Carol and Vern moved their family to Fort Collins, CO. Carol started as a nurse’s assistant at Eventide South nursing facility in 1972 where she then became the assistant Activity Director in 1973 and Activity Director in 1979. She later worked as the Activity Director at New Mercer Commons nursing facility in Fort Collins and retired in 1994. Once their sons left home, Carol and Vern continued their love of traveling. They purchased a truck and RV trailer and traveled the country every summer stopping for a few months to spend time with their family in Northern Colorado. After traveling around the country in their RV, they would spend their winters in Mesa, AZ where they made many new friends.
Carol and Vern finally settled down after 10 years of RV-ing and moved into the Sunbird Golf Resort in Chandler, AZ in 2004. There they lived for 15 years and met many wonderful friends. They would regularly travel back to Colorado in the summer to visit family. Because of health issues, Carol and Vern moved back to Windsor, Colorado in November 2019. After Vern’s passing in 2020, Carol moved into the Columbine Commons Assisted Living Facility and would spend many warm days in the beautiful garden there reading her books. She was an avid reader.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband Vern; son, Thomas; and granddaughter, Tiffany. She is survived by her two sons, William (Cimarron) and Christopher (Ellen), seven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Carol loved traveling, fishing, reading, and visiting with friends and she especially loved being with her sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
