Hazel Margaret Storm, 102, passed away at Berthoud Living Center, Berthoud, Colorado, October 1, 2011. She was born to Oliver and Fannie (Thew) James, February 20, 1909, in Osborne County, Kansas, where her family farmed until moving to Hoxie, Kansas. Hazel graduated from Sheridan County High School in 1927 and attended Fort Hayes State Teachers College. She had many fond memories of summers spent at Rocky Mountain Summer School, a branch of McPherson College, in Palmer Lake, Colorado. She loved her years teaching in one-room schoolhouses around Hoxie and Scott City, Kansas.
She married Austin L. Storm of Scott City, December 25, 1931. He preceded her in death, March 24, 2005. They both taught school for several years before working side by side in a variety of businesses of their own. They moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1953, and later to Tempe, Arizona. They enjoyed spending time at their summer home outside of Payson, Arizona. She moved to Loveland, Colorado in August, 2005.
She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Scott City and Phoenix and Community Christian Church in Tempe, working especially in the Sunday School department and in Christian Women’s Fellowship. She babysat for many years in church nurseries and for other organizations and cared for a number of foster children in her home. She always had open arms for anyone in need. Cooking was her hobby.
