He was raised in Hanna and graduated from High School there. He enjoyed playing basketball in school and often spoke of it. In his senior year he met a wonderful girl that must have caught his eye because after she graduated and had spent one year attending the University of WY, he asked her to marry him. Shirley E. Johnson and James R. Freeman were married August 30, 1949 in Hanna, WY in a home that Shirley's father had built and which is still standing today. This last August they celebrated their 65th anniversary.
After he graduated he went to work for the Union Pacific Coal Company in Hanna dropping railroad cars that were filled with coal. In 1954 he and his wife and 4 month old daughter moved to Ft. Collins, Co where he lived for the next 60 years. He worked in home construction for a short time , then moved to the corner of West Prospect and College Ave. where he ran a gas station and little grocery store. In 1959 he went to work at United Building Center where he became an assistant manager for several years before retiring.
Jim always loved the outdoors. He loved to take his family hunting, fishing and camping and most of his vacations were spent in the mountains in WY and CO. That passion was passed on to all of his family and he enjoyed many years of camping and fishing with his grandchildren. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren and they had a special bond with their ""Grandpa Jimmy"".
In his later years he and mom were able to enjoy some wonderful trips with their kids which left them with some wonderful memories. He also loved to fish at Red Feather Lakes as it was easy access for him.
