Jim was the youngest of three children. He graduated from the old Fort Collins high school in 1961 and attended Colorado State University before following in his brother’s footsteps by joining the Army from 1963-1967. He served our country in the Army Security Agency stationed in Berlin, Germany.
After Jim’s tour of duty, he attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO and lived his dream of qualifying to be on the Ski Patrol at the Purgatory ski area. The first day on ski patrol he fell and broke his leg. But that did not quelch his dream. Some 20 years later he requalified to be on the Ski Patrol at Snowy Range in WY.
Upon moving back to Fort Collins he worked at Woodward Governor. And to the amazement of young folks today, he met his future wife on computer dating. That marriage to Sharon, of over 54 years was blessed with two children, Jennifer and Hans. He shared his love of the outdoors with his family which also included downhill skiing, hiking, and rafting.
The diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease nearly 14 years ago significantly affected his ability to be active. This disease was caused by a devastating brain concussion which occurred during his active duty in Europe. However, it didn’t limit his ability to love his family or be the caring and encouraging man that he was. His faith in his Savior Jesus was strong and that faith was shared with his family.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Sue and John Hartman. He is survived by his wife Sharon, his daughter Jennifer (Erik) and their daughter Melissa, his son Hans and his daughters Harper and Lexi, his sister Sarah of Sequim, WA, his brother Bob of Littleton, CO, and many nieces and nephews.
