His family takes comfort in knowing that while his earthly journey has come to an end, his eternal life is just beginning. John was a good man with a golden heart. He was a good son, a caring brother, a wonderful husband, a loving and supportive father, grandfather, and uncle, and a true friend. He will be dearly missed.
John was born in La Junta, Colorado on February 22nd, 1948 to Maria Padloita Estrada and John Black Milner. He was the eldest of ten children. His siblings were Penny, Mona, David, Susan, Matt, Shelly, Debbie, Michael, and Bertha. He was raised in a loving home and taught the values of faith, family, and hard work.
On July 8th, 1978, John married the love of his life, Colleen Morrow. To this union John brought a daughter, Renee Milner, and a son, John E. Milner; and Colleen two daughters, Laurie Lee Moore and Janie Lynn Moore, who John raised as if they were his own. Their family was complete when, together, they welcomed a son, Shane Eugene Black Milner IV. John was a loving and supportive father to all of his children and loved seeing them succeed. John and Colleen were proud grandparents to eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. John was blessed throughout his life with many dear friends, most notably Harlen Garcia, who was like a big brother to John and always had his back. They shared a lifetime of memories as best friends. All through his life his beloved dogs remained some of his greatest companions.
John worked hard all his life. In 1969, he went to work for Rocky Flats Nuclear Plant, working his way up to Supervisor for Filter Tech Support. He retired in 1995. All along the way he held numerous part-time and side jobs such as power raking and splitting firewood. John was not an idle man. He enjoyed working with his hands and was proud of the mountain home he had built. He did beadwork, woodworking, and carved walking sticks. He loved planting gardens and growing lots of flowers. John was an amazing cook and loved feeding others. His family will never forget his homemade enchiladas. He enjoyed fly-fishing, hiking, and rafting. John loved his music. He was a deeply spiritual man and read his bible every day. He was also a bit of a rebel. John was liked by everyone. He had an amazing spirit and an always positive attitude. He would say, “The strong survive”, and that’s what John was, strong. He was a survivor.
