

She graduated from Fargo High School in 1952, earned her BA in English from Carleton College in 1956 (Phi Beta Kappa), her MA from NDSU in 1965, and her PhD from the University of Michigan in 1969.
Judie was married to Neil Burnett Johnson from 1956 to 1974, and then to Alfred L. Freeland from1977 until his death in 2003.
She taught at Moorhead State College (MN) from 1965-66. From 1970 to her retirement in 1997, she was a professor and academic administrator at Eastern Michigan University (Ypsilanti, MI.) She was selected as a Fellow of the American Council on Education for the academic year 1985-86.
After her retirement, she moved to Loveland, Colorado and then Fort Collins, Colorado. She raised and trained golden retrievers for many years and served as the human half of a therapy dog team from 2003 to 2020.
Judie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Larry Gregerson, and her sister, Jeannie Gregerson Pick. She is survived by daughters Catherine Norris and Wendy Lange (Peter), both of Fort Collins; grandchildren David Lange (Kristin Parsons), Kaitlin Lange, Chelsea Norris, Christian Norris (Natalya Ernst), and Megan Lange (Josh Pepek), all of northern Colorado; great-grandchildren Talia Lange, Alani Lange, Austin Lange, Dallen Lange, Liam Lange, and Jaden Lawrence, all of northern Colorado; nieces Lisa Gregerson and Lori Featherstone; nephews Mark Gregerson and Dan Gregerson; close cousins Paul (Cindee) Sather, Eleanor (Chris) Clarke, and Jane Ann Dosland; and her current therapy dog, Dickens.
A memorial service is planned for later in March. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the Morris Animal Foundation.
