
Kathy was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on October 12, 1947, and passed away after a long illness on October 28, 2022. She was the eldest child of Howard and Shirley Smith, and grew up on the family farms in Adel, Maynard, and Waverley, Iowa before attending Morningside College. She married her first husband, Rex Filer, soon after graduating, and had two sons, Brock and Darrin Filer, both of Pittsburgh, PA. During those years she taught junior high and high school in the various places they lived, specializing in math and computer science. After her divorce, she attended the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Palo Alto, California and received the Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 2000. She married her second husband, Peter J. Kahn, in 1996. She worked at the Office of Disability Services at West Virginia University, then as a therapist for Valley Community Mental Health in Fairmont, WV, before eventually establishing
a private practice in Christian counseling in Morgantown, WV. She was obliged to retire early in 2010 after receiving a diagnosis of Early Onset Alzheimer’s Dementia, and moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, in 2013. She is survived by her husband and two brothers and their families, Philip Smith of Fort Collins and Dave Smith of Ames, Iowa, as well as her two sons. A memorial service will be held at Timberline Church in Fort Collins at 10 AM on Saturday, December 3. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Kathy’s memory may be made to Morningside University in Sioux City, Iowa.
