Kay Metz Armstrong, 85, of Fort Collins, CO passed away at home, surrounded by her family on February 11, 2021. She was born on May 8, 1935 in Yankton, SD to Vern and Harriet Metz. She attended school in Mission Hill and Yankton, SD and was employed at 1st Dakota Bank in Yankton for 5 years. Kay married her soulmate, David Armstrong, in 1957. They were married almost 61 years before Dave passed away on March 31, 2018.
In 1969 the family moved to Fort Collins from Sioux Falls, SD. They immediately joined Trinity Lutheran Church where Kay volunteered for nearly 50 years. From 1978-1983 Dave and Kay lived in Boulder and made some incredible friends. They returned to Fort Collins where Kay continued to cultivate lifelong friendships through her volunteer work at multiple organizations including over 15 years at Poudre Valley Hospital, Junior Women's Club, PEO and Avery House Guild. Even though Kay was a stay-at-home Mom, she certainly did not stay at home! She was a fixture at every one of her kids' activities and involved in every way possible. Her dedication and service to her friends and family was truly remarkable. She is well remembered for her massive box of over 30 different Christmas cookies and candy that became a favorite tradition for friends and neighbors.
Kay and Dave were huge Rams fans and were devoted to attending both men's and women's events. Kay continued to follow the Rams on television in her final years. She also enjoyed gardening and reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
Kay is survived by her three children Jeff Armstrong (Susan), Julie Townsend (Rick) and Kristi Hawkins (Kevin); 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Kay leaves behind four brothers, Jim, Gene, Alan & Doug and was preceded in death by her oldest brother Duane, her husband Dave, and her parents Vern and Harriet.
Due to covid restrictions, a memorial will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Pathways Hospice.
