Born in Libya on July 15, 1942, he immigrated to the United States in 1977. Omar was an accomplished athlete. Starting as a national champion in his home country of Libya, Omar won gold competing internationally in Africa, Asia, and Europe, before becoming an American icon and Olympic champion in shot put.
A man of deep faith and community, he served as imam for the Islamic Center of Greeley for more than 48 years. He will be truly missed by so many.
