A man might have many friends but few fathers. I had three fathers. My natural father left home when I was two. Soon after that, I was passed from family to family through the California welfare system. After a few years, one of my aunts and her husband took me in. My adoptive father was a good provider, he took care of my needs and brought stability to my life. Yet as I grew up I came to understand that God was Holy and I a sinner. I understood and believed that God would judge sinners and that many would end up in Hell. I didn’t know how to avoid being one of them. I lived my life hoping that relatively good folks would get a pass but as often as not I did not even live up to what I thought that meant. Finally, in frustration, I told God “Whatever it takes for me to be saved you’ll have to do it, I can’t.” That’s when God brought Dick into the lives of Jenny and me. Sharing the words of grace from the Bible, he always made it clear that concerning salvation all that needed to be done had been done by Jesus on the cross. I needed only to abandon my shaky self-confidence and accept with confidence the finished work of Christ for all my sins. Dick became a father to me by sharing these biblical truths from scripture and ever directing my eyes toward Jesus. Now, Jenny and I join with missionaries in Northeast Brazil seeking out those with special needs, many who cannot leave their homes, bringing them wheelchairs, sharing biblical truth and helping them to see that the finished work of Christ on the cross was and remains the complete payment for all their sins. If I were able to add something to the headstone of my third earthly father, it would say: “Dick Berg - ever on the battlefield until the end.”
