Rodney J. Meyen

Rodney was a very kind and genuine person. He was a rare combination of hardworking, fun loving, and wild. Even on the hardest of days and through the many struggles he faced with his health, he always kept a positive attitude. He fought the good fight. He finished his course. He kept the faith.

Born in North Platte, Nebraska on September 26, 1943, Rodney was the son of Albert J. Meyen and Vivian Chase Meyen. He grew up in Sutherland, Nebraska and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1962. He proudly served in the US Army Reserves. He was very patriotic and loved his country.

On July 1, 1966, Rodney married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Eileen Binegar at the Sutherland Methodist Church. They made their home in Sutherland and had four children: Tommy Joe (who sadly died at birth), Angela Jo, Justin Everett, and Erin Michelle. The Meyen family relocated to Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1980. Rodney was devoted to his family and proudly followed the many activities of his children and grandchildren including hockey, football, basketball, wrestling, and track, and was a proud supporter of his daughters as Cheyenne Frontier Days Dandies. He was a loving and supportive husband, father & grandfather, and a loyal friend.

Rodney worked most of his life in trucking. He drove for TR Main, Fleece Bros, Consolidated Freightways, and ABF Trucking and spent many hours on the road. He was awarded the Million Miles Safe Driving Award three separate times with Consolidated Freightways. He loved to fish, and hunt ducks and pheasants. Rodney was a lifetime Nebraska Cornhusker fan. He was also an avid fan of the Wyoming Cowboys. He loved rodeo. He served for more than 30 years as a Mounted Marshall for the Cheyenne Frontier Days Parade Committee. During his lifetime he was blessed with great horses, especially Skip & Hollywood; many special dogs including Zak, Braveheart, and Koda; and many special cats including Tuxedo, Mr. Cat, and Little, who is missing Rodney today. Rodney was baptized in Horse Creek on the Petsch Ranch in Meriden, Wyoming alongside his grandson, Tyler. He attended Sutherland Methodist Church in Nebraska, The Gathering Church in Douglas, Wyoming, and helped establish Cheyenne Hills Church in Wyoming.

Rodney leaves behind the only woman he ever loved, his wife Joyce Meyen; children Angela Meyen, Justin Meyen (Riley), and Erin Meyen; his grandchildren Tyler Pope (Autumn), Justin Pope, Austin Pope, Merek Meyen, and Lily Meyen; and his great-grandson Kellan Everett Pope. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Charlene Meyen, Penny Meyen, Janice Sailors (Garen), and Jean Moore (Robert); brother-in-law Milan Moore, and many nieces and nephews that were all special to him.

He is preceded in death by his first-born son Tommy Joe Meyen; sister Alberta Abel and her husband George; brother Harry Meyen; sister-in-law Jane Moore; his father and his mother, Albert & Vivian Meyen; and by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Everett & Bonita Binegar.

Rodney's life will be honored on July 1st, 2025, what would have been he and Joyce's 59th wedding anniversary. A Graveside Service will take place at 11:00AM CST at Sutherland Riverview Cemetery (South off I-80 at Sutherland Exit). A Celebration of Life will follow at the American Legion Hall on South Maple Street (near the rodeo grounds). Wearing your favorite western wear or sports jersey is welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in support of the Sutherland Anchor Memorial Park, the Gary Sinese Foundation, or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
