A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Shirlie came into the world on April 12, 1935. Just like her late husband, Dick, she was born and raised in Globeville, Colorado, a neighborhood in Denver. She graduated from North High School in 1952 and in April of 1954, she married the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Walters. Shirlie & Dick celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2024.
In 1956, the Walters family moved to Illinois where Dick was offered a job. Later in 1959, they moved back to Colorado where Dick partnered with his father to open a family business. They settled in Fort Collins in 2002. While Dick was at work, Shirlie was at home taking care of the family. She was a devoted wife and mother. When their children were of school age, Shirlie went to work as a teacher's aide. The hours were conducive to continuing to be there for her children and keeping up her home, where her heart truly was.
Shirlie was a woman of great faith and attended the Lutheran Church all her life, most recently Redeemer Lutheran. When Shirlie became sick and was unable to attend in person, she and Dick regularly watched services together online. Shirlie was an avid volunteer. For years she volunteered at the Harmony Urgent Care info desk and the thrift shop, when it was still around, and was awarded 15 years of service for the Poudre Valley Hospital Foundation. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling with her daughters and their families and especially enjoyed a trip to Israel with her daughter-in-law, Debbie.
Shirlie was a lovely woman. She was sweet, tough and had an endearing sense of humor. She loved her children and her husband dearly. She delighted in spoiling her grand and great-grandchildren. Her family was her life and they always came first. She will be missed.
Shirlie is survived by her children, Karri Hathcoat (Ken), Larry Walters (Jesi), and Kami Mach (Roger); grandchildren, Jessica Hekman (Matt), Jerrod Walters, Kyle Hathcoat, Kevin Hathcoat (Nicole), Brianna Van Sickle, and Jenae Walters; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Alayna, and Everett; and by her daughter-in-law, Debbie Walters. She is greeted in Heaven by her loving husband of more than 70 years, Dick Walters; their son, Alan Walters; her brother, Donald Schimpf; and by her parents George and Marie Schimpf.
A Graveside Service will be held at 12pm on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Shirlie will be laid to eternal rest beside her late husband, Dick.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to Pathways Hospice of Northern Colorado. Treasured memories of Shirlie and words of condolence for her family are welcome at resthavencolorado.com.
