Edward Lee Salgado “Ed” was born in San Diego, California to Manuel and Guadalupe “Lupe” Salgado. As the youngest of three children, he grew up in Santa Ana where his love of family, sports, music, and life-long friendships were formed. With his outgoing personality, he never met a stranger. Many will miss his back-and-forth banter. It has been said, "if Ed was teasing you, he liked you."
Ed's love of sports had him playing baseball by the age of nine. His All-Star Little League team was only one game away from proceeding to the Little League World Series. He attended Santa Ana High School where he played basketball. His dream of a college basketball scholarship was shattered when he came down with Scarlet Fever. Ed’s love of music began at Willard Junior High where he started playing the trumpet. His experience in the school band led him to play in various clubs and halls including the American Legion. Ed never lost his love for baseball and basketball, but also became a football and avid NASCAR fan.
Ed's parents always stressed the importance of education and were proud when he was the first in his family to graduate from college. With his BA degree in Business from Cal State Fullerton, his early career opportunities with Transamerica Corp. & Beverly Healthcare took him to Ohio, Texas, and Puerto Rico. Orange County was always home, and he returned to the Anaheim/Yorba Linda area in the mid-1970s. In 1978, he started Canyon Office Supplies, Inc. which he led for 41 years.
Ed loved singing in his church choir at Messiah Lutheran Church, Yorba Linda. His love for community was evident through his active participation with various local non-profit organizations. He served on the Board of Directors for United Way of Orange County and St. Jude Heritage Foundation. As a CHOC Padrino, he proudly assisted as a founding member of the Disneyland/CHOC Walk annual fundraiser. He worked as a Yorba Linda Traffic Commissioner and was active in his local Yorba Linda Rotary Club where he acted as club president and is a lifetime Paul Harris Fellow.
Ed's love of entertaining was evident in the various parties he and Mary hosted. Favorites included their annual Super Bowl Party, family reunions and tamale parties at Christmastime. And you can't leave out motorhome fun, tailgating with family & friends at USC Football games or camping infield with family and friends at local NASCAR events, where he was often seen with a fine cigar & Chivas.
Ed dearly loved all five of his children and prayed that they each find their passion, follow their dreams, and be successful in whatever field they chose. While all who knew Ed saw how much he loved his children, they would still be quick to tell you that he loved being a grandpa most. He cherished attending Journey's ROTC activities, Brendan's Little League games, Alex's dance recitals, Ashlynn's cheer competitions, Savannah's dance recitals, and playing with Ryan and Reed. Each one was always close to his heart.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of more than 26 years, Mary Salgado; His five children & their spouses: Ken (son) & Jennifer Salgado, Brian (son) & Stacy Salgado, Jason (son) & Charmaine Salgado, Courtney (daughter) & Ryan McGuffin, Frank (son) & Allison Montejano. His nine grandchildren: Jared, Journey, Brendan, Alexandra, Ashlynn, Savannah, Connor, Ryan & Reed; His sister, Florence & Fred Gorena; his brother, Manuel "Sal" & Stacy Salgado; Many loving cousins, nieces & nephews.
Ed—
While Lewy Body Dementia started taking you away from all of us who loved you many years ago, each stage was more painful to watch. Losing you is so hard and trying to imagine my life without you is even harder. You have left a void in the hearts of many. See you when I see you. I cross my heart. Rest easy, my love.
—Mary
