89 years old
Son of Charles Michael Bolcik and Louise Holzworth Bolcik. Charlie, as he was known to family and friends, lived a rich, full life, filled with laughter and the joy of spending time with loved ones. Charlie was best defined by his love of family. Whenever he got together with one of his grandchildren, Charlie would present them with a silver or gold dollar. He would send his kids, grandkids, family and friends envelopes filled with articles and cartoons that he had come across, cut out and shared. He would send anything he thought they might find interesting or funny. Those that received these envelopes, always knew it was Charlie’s way of trying to connect and tell them, “I’m thinking of you. I love you.”
His passion for reading was legendary. He favored non-fiction books, and especially loved history. If he came across a book he thought someone might find interesting, he’d send it to them, hoping they’d get as much enjoyment from it as he had.
Charlie was an excellent conversationalist and could easily talk on a wide range of subjects. He especially enjoyed talking politics, history and religion. He spoke both German and Latin having attended Catholic High School. Charlie attended undergraduate school at Middlebury College in Vermont, where he obtained a degree in Government and International Relations. He went on to attend Columbia Law School at Columbia University in New York where he was a member of the American Academy of Political Science. He then went on to serve his country in the United States Army. His tour of duties included time at Fort Hood, and in Germany. He was attached to the 593rd Heavy Field Battalion.
Charlie had a good memory for events that had happened in years past, and impressed family by easily recalling those conversations and stories. Charlie liked telling stories, and sharing his memories. He loved the theater, often attending performances at the Folger Theater, Toby’s Dinner theater, and other venues in DC. He also loved his garden and cooking. He grew all manner of food which he then cooked gourmet meals for all to enjoy. He loved traveling. He and Diana would often take trips abroad with his brother Bob, and sister Charlene, along with their spouses. They were often joined by wonderful groups of friends. He also cherished traveling with family. He especially loved going on cruises where he could spend much of his time reading, eating and enjoying life.
Charlie spent many years working in the insurance business, but found work happiness at his job with Shred-It. He loved that job because of the relationships he formed with fellow employees and the clients they served. He gave up his Shred-It job at age 78 because of a leukemia diagnosis. He miraculously beat that leukemia, but died from complications related to a second type of leukemia that he developed in the past few years.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife of almost 64 years, Diana Giuliano Bolcik, his four children (and their spouses), Chip (and Laura), Christopher (and Steve Cline), Scott (and Kelly), Alyce (and Terry Martin). He is also survived by his brother, Bob (and wife Claudia), His sister, Charlene, and his six grandchildren (and their spouses), Adam (and Kiara), Corrie (and Scott Matthiessen), Emily, Connor, Caroline and Abigail.
