Dr. Denise Simons-Morton, 72, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother and accomplished physician epidemiologist, artist, and author, passed away peacefully at her home in NW Washington surrounded by family on January 10, 2024. Denise was a passionate researcher whose career at the National Institutes of Health advanced our understanding of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and chronic disease. In her 25 years at NIH she authored more than 100 scientific papers and led numerous studies including two of the largest multi-site studies ever conducted at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.
After graduating from Wheaton High School, Denise got her BS at the University of Maryland, College Park, followed by her MD at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. During her medical residency, she studied for her MPH at The Johns Hopkins University. For her final degree, she completed a PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Texas School of Public Health.
Denise had many passions at which she became quite skilled. She could not stop learning and threw herself into music, art, fitness, and authorship with equal enthusiasm. Denise taught step aerobics and general fitness classes for many years at the YMCA, Sport and Health, and other fitness clubs. Her classes were always full as she choreographed and DJed a new routine for her students weekly. Denise was an accomplished artist, working in oil on canvas and digital art. Most of her work was in abstracts, including a series of abstract squares inspired by Google Earth photos. Her oil canvases range from colorful still life through earthy abstractions. From a young age, Denise pursued music, playing piano through most of her adult life. Denise published her Memoir Public Health / Private Disease about the intersection of her experience battling Parkinson’s Disease and her commitment to advancing public health for all.
Denise will be missed dearly by her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband Bruce Simons-Morton, her daughter Bahia Simons-Lane and Bahia’s husband Chris Lane, and her son Don Morton and Don’s wife Erin Will Morton and Denise’s two grandchildren, Juniper and Rosemary.
