

Born in St. Louis, MO on August 16, 1939, he was a son of the late Malcolm Atterbury and Charlotte Sager Thompson. He grew up in Granite City, IL along with his three brothers and two sisters .
He graduated Granite City High School in 1957 and attended Southern Illinois University receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1961. Donald continued his education at the University of Virginia receiving both his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Experimental Psychology in 1963 and 1967.
Dr. Thompson researched and published many papers while at the IBR (Institute for Behavioral Research). His research involved repeated acquisition baselines with pigeons and monkeys, and the effects of various drugs on learning and memory using those baselines. He was a professor at Georgetown University Medical School, Department of Pharmacology from 1969 to 1994.
In his younger years Donald enjoyed playing tennis. Later in life he liked to watch sports especially Georgetown basketball, Washington Nationals, Washington Redskins and tennis. He loved spending time playing games with family especially Monopoly and Sorry, and he loved to write movie reviews for family and friends. Donald enjoyed his riding mower always keeping the yard looking good. He was active in the AARP from 2000-2022.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Annette Spera Thompson; son Marc Gregory Thompson and his wife Nadine Gartner Thompson; daughter Sharon Thompson Schill; six grandchildren, Hannah, India and Linus Schill, and Connor, Dominic and Simone Thompson; brothers Hadley Thompson, Ralph Thompson and his wife Denise; sisters Kay Ferrell and Barb Messey.
