March 12, 1927 – September 7, 2021
Jane Farber died in her home on September 7, 2021, after a year-long heroic struggle against pancreatic cancer and heart failure. Jane was trusting when she had to be, caring always, both smart and independent in her approach to living.
Jane was a graduate of The College of Notre Dame of Maryland. Armed with a degree in biology she went on to forge a long and dedicated career in public service for 35 years. Her boss at NIH, Dr. Edward Seligman, hired Jane to be the first woman he would empower to supervise a laboratory then comprised of male technicians only; such was his understanding of her leadership and work ethic. She went on to perform inspections of pharmaceutical houses, and plasma centers.
In retirement she traveled the world with her best friend Jeanne Lacerte in search of exotic birds. She also enjoyed meeting friends for golf, painting and coordinating volunteers for the Asbury Catholic community. Jane was a devoted daughter and sister, assuming extensive caregiving responsibilities for her father P. Allen Farber. She was also a loyal cousin to two women with large immediate families and was a joyful presence at numerous graduations, birthdays and weddings. Her home was always a happy refuge for great nieces and great nephews – filled with treasures collected during her sojourns.
She is survived by a network of extended family members, who are grateful to Montgomery Hospice and devoted aides with My Home Companion. Family members far and wide will ask that their parishes remember her during Sunday mass.
A graveside service will be held at New Cathedral Cemetery, 4300 Old Frederick Rd., Baltimore , MD on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.
