Age 87
On Wednesday, February 24, 2016, Rev. John Hilary Hayden, a Benedictine monk of St. Anselm?s Abbey in Washington, DC, died after a long illness. Born in Chevy Chase, MD in 1929, he attended St. John?s College in Annapolis and subsequently entered the community at St. Anselm?s. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1956 and taught classical languages in the monastery school for some years before embarking on parochial and chaplaincy work at several locations in northern Virginia before living his final years in retirement back at the abbey. In addition to his fellow monks, he is survived by two brothers: Dunstan Hayden (Barbara) of Washington, DC, and Martin of The Hills, Texas. Friends may call on Friday, February 26, 2016 from 4:00PM until 9:00PM at St. Anselm's Abbey, 4501 South Dakota Ave., N.E. where Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, February 27 at 10:30AM Interment at St. Anselm's Abbey Cemetery at a later date
