

Born April 28, 1937, in Washington, D.C., John was a longtime Gaithersburg resident.
A distinguished aviator, John graduated from Mercersburg Academy and attended Lehigh University before serving as a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter pilot and Naval Aviator(1961–1966). He continued his life’s passion for flying as a pilot for United Airlines, rising to the rank of Captain over his distinguished 33 year career.
John had a deep appreciation for fine furniture, jazz, art, and model trains. He was a deep thinker who relished a spirited debate and a glass of fine Scotch. He was also a caring counselor to friends and a fierce advocate for education.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Sydney and Eugenia; his sister, Karolen; and his first wife, Charlene Morgan.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; his sister, Sarah “Sally” Packer Linderman; his children, John Jr. (Amy) and Laura Barker (Andrew); and step-daughters, Gretchen McMillin (Rob) and Mindy Gay (Henry).
His legacy lives on through his eleven grandchildren: Emily, Garrett, Abby, Lucy, Maggie, Samantha (Kyle), Patrick, Elizabeth, Ross (Hannah), Patsy, and Joshua; and his two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Lucas.
