

Silver Spring, MD. The oldest of seven children, Jack was born on March 30, 1939 in
Washington, D.C. to John E. and Mary Murray Sherman. He graduated from Gonzaga College
High School and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from
The Catholic University of America. Following his graduation, Jack was a full-time faculty
member at the university for 39 years. In addition, he worked for the United States Naval
Surface Weapons Center in Silver Spring, MD for 33 years.
During his 33 years with the government, Jack received seven invention awards, some of which
resulted in patents. Jack also received the “Human Awareness Award” in recognition of his
contributions to upholding the values of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Believing strongly in his faith, family, and friends, Jack was the consummate community leader.
He was president of the Catholic Club of Georgetown where he met his lovely wife, Lois Jane
Schmidt. Jack was a member of the Catholic RENEW Group and was president of the
Stonegate Community Homeowners Association. Jack was a member of St. John the Baptist
Catholic Church in Silver Spring through which he volunteered for the Colesville Council of
Community Congregations (C4), the Gabriel Project, Meals on Wheels, and served as a
Stephen Minister. He was also Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus for many years. As a
resident for the last seven years at Riderwood Retirement Community, Jack participated in
numerous clubs and activities, including the Gentlemen’s Songsters. Right up until the time of
his passing, Jack served his community as an Extraordinary Minister.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Lois, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage. He is also
survived by his daughter, Alyssa Ranko and her husband, Ken, his son, John D. Sherman, Jr.
and his wife, Paige, and his daughter, Katie Sherman. Jack’s three grandchildren, Sydney
Sherman, Lindsay Sherman, and Jack Rawson survive him as well. In addition, Jack is
survived by his siblings Mary Ann Castagnetti, Tom Sherman, Kathy D’Engenis, Frank
Sherman, Steve Sherman and Joe Sherman. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Lorraine
Schmidt, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Doris and Ed Walsh, as well as a large group of
nieces, nephews and numerous cousins.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 12 PM followed by a Mass of
Christian Burial at 1 PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 12319 New Hampshire
Avenue, Silver Spring, MD. Rite of Committal will be held at The Gate of Heaven Cemetery
at 2:30 PM. For those who can’t make it in person, the service is going to be streaming live at 1pm on Thursday the 10th at
