

Paul was born in 1935 to Paul and Evelyn Paulsen of Denison, Iowa. He moved to California in his teen years but returned every summer to his aunt and uncle’s Iowa farm. He received his B.S. at U.C. Riverside and then earned his PhD in analytical chemistry at Cornell University. Paul met his wife, Roseanne, at Cornell, and married in August 1960.
He worked for over 30 years at the National Institute of Science and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Paul’s expertise in Mass Spectrometry contributed to the research and development of analytical standards and methodologies used across all levels of industry and government in the United States.
He liked travelling the United States by auto, crossing the nation many times, visiting friends and relatives and many National Parks. He never forgot his Iowa roots and took great pleasure in his very large vegetable garden with patches of flowers adding to the natural beauty of corn, tomatoes, and beans.
Paul is survived by his wife of 65 years, Roseanne; by his sister Clara; by his children, Susan, Carlotta, Janet, Paul David, and Jeffrey Paulsen; his grandchildren, Virginia Boaz, Thomas Hastings Greer IV, Liam Greer, Dalton Shields, Arnold Paulsen and Audric Paulsen; and his great-grandson, Thomas Hastings Greer V.
A Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 14th, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at DeVol Funeral Home in Gaithersburg, Maryland. A graveside service will be held at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland on Wednesday, October 15th, at 11am.
