Paul Edward Pini of Derwood, Maryland, a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on June 8, 2023. He was 88 years old.
A long-time resident of Derwood, Maryland, Paul was born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 2, 1934. He was born to Olga and Selo Pini and was the youngest of his four siblings. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1951. In 1953, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Chatearoux, France. He served 10 years of faithful service, earning the rank of Sargent before transitioning out of the military and into a civilian government service, employed by the U.S. Department of Defense. In 1956, he married Jeanette Meomartino, and they lived in Montgomery County, Maryland. In 1997, he retired after 43 years of faithful service to the Federal government.
Paul had a one-of-a-kind sense of humor, was quick with a joke, had a boisterous laugh, and was truly proud of his Italian heritage. He embodied the Italian spirit as was reflected in his passion for good food, and of course, good wine. More than anything, he cherished the special times spent with family gathered around the table sharing traditional Italian dishes passed on to him from his Chef father, Selo, and he delighted in teaching the little ones the “tricks of the trade,” carrying on the family tradition while creating lifelong memories.
Paul will be remembered as having a deep voice, a broad, contagious smile, and a bottomless glass of “vino.” He was the life of any party -- there was never a dull moment, and everyone was guaranteed a good laugh. Fondly known by his friends as “Pini,” he was an avid golfer, loved golfing trips and playing poker with his buddies, boating adventures with dear friends, spending quality time with family, hanging out on the deck with neighbors, and relaxing watching the sun set over the bay with his wife at their beach house in Ocean City, Maryland.
Paul was a dedicated Catholic and enjoyed volunteering at his church homes in both Derwood, Maryland and in Ocean City, Maryland. He also faithfully volunteered at his local food pantry for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jeanette; his son, Keith Pini and his wife, Lety; his daughter, Wanda DiCocco and her husband, Dan; and his daughter, Lorna Kipfer and her husband, John. Paul was “Nonno,” to seven grandchildren: Ashley Pini, Mark Pini, Fallon Pini, Daniel DiCocco, Jr., Dominic DiCocco, Johnathan Kipfer, and Hannah Kipfer.
In keeping with the family’s wishes, the services will be private, however, you are welcome to share a fond memory. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation, we encourage you to do so in Paul’s name to Casey House, in Derwood, Maryland. They truly are angels working there.
