

Reverend Monsignor John B. Brady, Jr. passed away on September 9, 2021 (age 92). Monsignor Brady, a fourth generation Washingtonian, was born on May 7, 1929 in Washington, D.C., to John B. Brady and Mary Rupert Brady. He graduated from St. Ann’s School, Georgetown Prep, and received a BS in physics from Georgetown University in 1951. He then studied at Saint Mary Seminary, Baltimore, MD, and was ordained a priest on June 4, 1955, by Archbishop Patrick O’Boyle at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C.
His first assignment as Parochial Vicar was to Holy Redeemer Parish in Kensington, Maryland. While there, he was appointed Chaplain for Scouting in 1960 and Chaplain to Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, Maryland in 1963. In 1966, he was assigned as Parochial Vicar to the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Washington, D.C. In 1971, he was appointed full-time Archdiocesan Chaplain for Scouting, with residence at Saint John the Baptist Parish, Silver Spring, Maryland. In 1974, he was appointed Pastor of Saint Joseph’s Parish, Pomfret, Maryland, and, in 1985, as Pastor of Saint John Vianney Parish, Prince Frederick, Maryland, and, in 1994, as Pastor of Holy Angels Parish¸ Avenue, Maryland. Monsignor Brady retired in 2005 into independent living in Bethesda, Maryland, during which time he assisted with masses at St. Bartholomew and Our Lady of Mercy Parishes, and then in 2017 moved to Saint John the Evangelist Parish in Clinton, Maryland. In 1975, Monsignor Brady was named Chaplain, Catholic Daughters of America, Court Neale. In 1978, he was appointed Chaplain, Goshen Scout Camps. He was named Monsignor in 1991. In 1993, he was appointed Dean of the Calvert County Deanery.
He is survived by siblings Sr. Marian Brady, S.P. (Bethesda, MD), Rupert J. Brady (Bethesda, MD) and Therese Brady Donohue (Amherst, MA), 10 nieces and nephews, 17 great nieces and nephews and 1 great great nephew.
Viewing on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at Saint John the Evangelist Parish, 8908 Old Branch Ave. Clinton, Maryland, from 3:00-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil Mass at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Bartholomew Parish, 6900 River Road Bethesda, Maryland on Friday, September 17 at 1:00 PM. Private interment (due to Covid) will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
