

Sandra Hendley Kavanagh of North Bethesda, MD died peacefully on September 9, 2022, surrounded by her family. Sandra was born in Brooklyn, NY, on September 27, 1942, the only child of Catherine (née Brown) and George J. Hendley.
Sandra attended elementary school at Visitation Academy and graduated from Fontbonne Hall Academy in Brooklyn, NY in 1960. She studied for three years at Marymount Manhattan College. In December 1962, she met JosephKavanagh, also of Brooklyn, NY, while he was on leave from the Navy, after having graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1961. The two were married in Brooklyn on August 31, 1963 and celebrated 52 years of marriage until his death in 2016.
Once Sandra and Joe settled in the Washington, DC area, she completed her undergraduate studies and received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Marymount Manhattan. Sandra was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and taught accounting at Montgomery College. She also served as an accountant for NTI Corporation, an engineering services company founded by her late husband.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Sandra is survived by her three children, Joseph C. (Mercedes) Kavanagh of Bethesda, MD; Edward H. (Karen) Kavanagh of Poolesville, MD; and Elizabeth K. (Jeff) Summers of Brookville, MD, and six grandchildren: Katie, Grace, Jack, Jimmy, Caroline, and Teddy.
A service will be held at the US Naval Academy Columbarium on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow at the Naval Academy Club, 2 Truxtun Rd, Annapolis MD, 21402.
