James Denton was the first mailman I knew. He was our mailman back in the late 1950's and early '60's in the Lineberger Park area. He always had a kind word and smile and would ask me how school was that day. He knew when report cards came out and would ask about it. If I told him I made a good grade he would give me a nickel and words of encouragement...a nickel would buy a really big Three Musketeers candy bar back then. He brought a lot of joy into my life and memories that I will never forget. My deepest sympathy to your family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I don't know if my late mother, born Essie Love Denton (1936-2007) and James knew each other, but they were first cousins. She was the daughter of James' uncle, Lester Denton (1892-1939). I learned of James' passing from Alice, the wife of Ned Denton. I've greatly enjoyed looking through the photos here. I regret not meeting James, but had hoped to in the near future. Unfortunately, I cannot visit NC very often, only once every year or two. I met Jim in 1971 when I had a job delivering parcels to the Gastonia Post Office. He was such a fine man. He always had a smile and we would always have a laugh together. He was a fellow you would never forget. Yerars later I had the pleasure of working with Jim's brother Carl, also a wonderful person and friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

James was our mail man on 501 South Avon when i was 6 years old.  Even as a kid i looked up to him.  He taught me to never forget someone as he was to kids. He gave me my first bicycle for Christmas because he knew my mother was really having a hard time and could not give us anything.
  Thank you James Denton .  I will remember you long as i live.  One good man.

Some years ago, we always looked forward to the Denton Reunion at Rankin Lake. James was there as he was instrumental in keeping this an annual event. We would see James and Nell from time to time in and around Gastoniaespecially at Wendy's on Union Rd. James always greeted us with a pleasant smile and warm conversation. James was certainly a man who lived his Christianity to the fullest and has earned his angelic wings and a place in heaven. Mr. Denton
Thirty years ago Mr. Denton stopped on Union rd. and offered me a ride when my car broke down.  That was followed by many years of most enjoyable visits.  He always had a smile on his face and sweet spirit.   I know that he missed Nell and is rejoicing in the reunion.  I shall miss seeing him but look forward to a time in the future when we will be able to visit through eternity. My condolences to the family.
