

Joan was born on December 31, 1933, in Cherokee Co., NC to the late James and Ruby Neal. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Abee; 7 sisters, Mary, Hazel, Geneva, Pauline, Beulah, Helen and Mildred; as well as 2 brothers, Bob and Allen Neal.
Joan passed away after a life defined by devotion, kindness, and quiet strength. A proud graduate of Dallas High School, she earned the honor of salutatorian of her class, a reflection of her determination and love of learning. For ten years, Joan worked at Mary Jo’s, where she was known for her steady work ethic and warm presence. Outside of work, she found joy in the simple, beautiful things—sewing, tending to her flowers and plants with a true green thumb, and creating a home filled with care and creativity. Joan’s greatest love was always her family and her faith. She lived her life guided by her devotion to the Lord and was a lifetime member of Maylo Methodist Church, a community that meant the world to her. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her generosity, and the way she nurtured everything and everyone around her.
A visitation will be held at Carothers Funeral Home at Gaston Memorial Park (2205 Williamsburg Dr, Gastonia, NC 28054) on Monday, January 12, 2026, from 12:30 PM – 1:45 PM with a Celebration of Life to follow at 2:00 PM. Burial will take place immediately following all services at Gaston Memorial Park, 1200 S New Hope Rd., Gastonia, NC 28054.
Survivors include her children, Melvin Abee and James Abee and his wife, Tina; grandchildren, Joshua Abee, Logan Abee, and Issac Abee; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
